9 Questions with Henrik Lønne

The pursuit of wisdom in any walk of life quickly reveals that what you think you know is not nearly enough to get you to where you want to go. As I'm starting out in my football journey I challenged myself to reach out to those already working in various roles in football to answer a short list of questions. My goal wasn't to get answers but relevant perspectives on the game within the game.

Here is Henrik Lønne:

What is your first memory of football?

It actually wasn’t good. I grew up in a small village, and I wasn’t a good soccer player. Rather than bringing us together the sport was used to exclude me. Later on soccer become a positive thing in my life as I used it to connect with my dad, and build a closer relationship.

What attracted you to media?

The ability to tell stories and get access to information, that would otherwise have been off limits to me.

What is the biggest misconception/cliche regarding football in North America you’ve found?

That there is a lack of passion or interest.

If you could start over what skill would you build on first?

Attention to detail and/or graphic design.

How do you see North American football growing going forward?

As the sport grows more commercial North America has a great benefit of a strong commercial infrastructure already in place. Combined with a growing interest and resources invested in soccer, the sport will be established in the world elite.

What three (3) football icons would you want to have a meal with? Why?

Landon Donovan - I want to understand what kept him from playing more in European soccer and if he has any career regrets.

Megan Rapinoe - Not only do I expect her to be funny and pleasant, but also insightful in societal matters.

Eusebio - I want to understand his journey from colonial Mozambique to the top of world soccer.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into this space?

Honestly, don’t. Sports journalism is fiercely competitive and even some of the best journalists are struggling financially. If you have other passions you want to pursue professionally, consider then before sports media.

What is your favorite quote or saying?

'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Alfred Lord Tennyson
